Common Types of Cancer
Skin Cancer
- Skin cancer is the most widespread as well as the most curable form
of cancer
- Skin cancer may appear in two forms: non-melanoma and melanoma,
with the latter being the more serious form
- Almost all skin cancers are the result of overexposure to ultraviolet
light from natural sunlight or tanning salons
Warning Signs
Spotting skin cancer early on can make all the difference in
terms of getting better, and a good method would be to check moles periodically,
especially those which:
- Moles which are not symmetrical on both sides
- Raised moles with an irregular appearance
- Moles with uneven or jagged edges
- Moles whose diameter exceeds a quarter of an inch
- Moles with darkening or changing color noticeably, or having unusual
colors such as red, purple, grey, white, or pink
Breast Cancer
- After skin cancer, this is the second most common cancer among women
- Breast cancer originates with tumors in the breast tissue
- Two forms of breast tumors are "in situ", which can be
treated and cured; and “invasive”, which is spreading
and has grave consequences
- A large number of tumors that arise in this area are benign, but
there are also cancerous tumors
- Catching breast cancer early can mean successful treatment, so be
sure to
have regular breast exams and mammograms.
Prostate Cancer
- Prostate cancer only occurs in men, and originates in the prostate
gland, (which is by the rectum, beneath the bladder)
- Prostate cancer is able to grow rapidly and extend to other parts
of the body, or it can be localised in the prostate,
without growth
- Most cases of prostate cancer are the type with low growth rates,
seldom causing serious problems
Lung Cancer
- Lung cancer can come in two forms: small-cell, and non-small cell
- Smoking tobacco is the largest risk factor for the development of
lung cancer
- The non-small cell form is the more common, typically spreading
at a rate relatively slower than the small-cell form
- Small cell lung cancer is nearly always caused by smoking
Endometrial and Ovarian Cancer
- These forms of cancer usually found in the female reproductive system
- Endometrial cancer originates from the womb, in the lining of the
uterus, while Ovarian cancer is found in the ovaries, one or both
- Endometrial cancer is commonly found in post-menopausal women, and
its most telling sign is abnormal bleeding
- Ovarian cancer can come in several forms, depending on its size
and location. Sadly, ovarian cancer is difficult to detect in its
early stages
Rectal Cancer and Colon Cancer
- Rectal cancer originates in the area of the large intestine nearest
to the anus, the rectum, while colon cancer originates in the colon,
or large intestine
- Both forms have similar characteristics, as most start off as a
polyp, which is a small innocuous growth in the colon wall. The spread
and growth of this polyp is what causes cancer
Warning Signs
- Cramp-like pains in the lower area of the stomach
- Blood in the stool or in the loo, following a bowel movement
- A significant change in the appearance of one’s stool
